Many of my pregnant clients ask if it's possible and safe to work their abdominals during pregnancy. In fact, it is very important to engage the abdominals, but not in the usual "crunch" position. The Transversus Abdominis, or TA, is the abdominal muscle that lies deep within our core, close to the pelvic floor. It is a crucial part of the labor process, as the TA is one of the major muscles used to push the baby out. Strengthening the TA will help the body recover far more quickly after pregnancy.
