Touring the Abercorn archaeological dig... fun, educational, and free

by Traci Schumacher on Wed, 04/03/2013 - 10:10pm

In the shadow of a centuries-old live oak in Georgetown, there is an archaeological dig underway, exploring the pre-Civil War and Civil War history of this location. Due to road work planned for the intersection of Abercorn Extension and King George Boulevard, this historic site behind Parker's gas station is being excavated, and free 90-minute tours are available for the public.

Ice skating adventure brings out the personalities

by Traci Schumacher on Thu, 12/13/2012 - 12:41pm

Our family went ice skating this week at the Civic Center's annual Skate Fest. We try to go every year, and little by little the kids are making progress in their skating skills. With three kids, I'm fascinated to see how their personality differences are highlighted by such a “risky” activity.

Our first family camping adventure

by Traci Schumacher on Tue, 10/30/2012 - 11:09am

Camping. The mere thought of the word conjures visions of the great outdoors, toasting marshmallows, hiking, and a cozy tent. The reality of this past weekend did in fact include all of these elements, mixed in with a good dose of sibling fussiness, the revelation of things forgotten, and the logistics of coping in a large group environment, all rounded out with general sleep deprivation.

The $1 kids movie experience

by Traci Schumacher on Fri, 07/27/2012 - 8:52am

Have you taken your kids to the $1 movies yet this summer? I finally took my three this week. We saw Rio at the Regal Cinemas behind the Savannah Mall.

I wasn't sure how it would go. We don't attend movies very often (okay, that's an understatement), and my youngest is 3-years-old. We have never taken him to the movies without having to leave at least once during the show (which I find highly annoying, although I understand it is to be expected for such a little one).

Music lessons for babies?

by Traci Schumacher on Mon, 06/25/2012 - 10:57am

You've probably heard of the benefits of classical music and music lessons for children. Now a Canadian scientific study shows that music lessons for babies as young as 6 months old can have developmental benefits.

Strategies for surviving a long car ride with kids

by Traci Schumacher on Tue, 07/26/2011 - 11:34pm

Have you gone on vacation this summer? We're getting ready to embark on a 16+ hour drive to Chicago soon with the three kiddos.

Lap desks, activity books, magnetic games, scavenger hunt cards, art supplies... all ready to go. Hopefully they'll do the trick of entertaining our little people for the bulk of the journey, preserving the sanity of us all.

Do you have any tried-and-true strategies for passing the time on long car rides? I'm open to suggestions. I'll let you know how it goes!
