DOLLARS & SENSE: School shopping — tax free or not

By Arlinda Smith Broady, Savannah Morning News

Celebrating a holiday that no longer exists could feel a little like the Mad Hatter’s Unbirthday Party. But Georgia retailers, who lamented the General Assembly’s decision not to enact a Tax Free Weekend this back-to-school season, are behaving as if the legislation passed anyway.

JCPenney at Oglethorpe Mall has a slew of specials and will open at
7 a.m. Saturday.

“We’ve developed a good customer base over the years,” said store manager Tom Duff. “That’s helped our bottom line a lot.”

Hot 'n Healthy: Standing Oblique Crunch

Hot 'n Healthy: Standing Oblique Crunch

It's hot and it's beach season, so let's work on our hips and waist with this great core and oblique exercise. I refer to this exercise as the standing oblique crunch. It is a great exercise that targets your "love handles" and slims your waistline.

Moderate weight with 12 to 15 repetitions on each side is optimal. The main focus of this exercise is to "squeeze" the muscle group.

BOOKWORM: Shaq's mother tells her own story

By Terri Schlichenmeyer, for the Savannah Morning News

With truly mixed feelings, you awaited the day. On one hand, you couldn't wait to see your child take his first steps. It was you, after all, who helped him practice by holding his little fingers as he tippy-toed between your knees.

On the other hand, you knew that as soon as he took those first steps, nothing would be safe any more, including him. Not only could he reach for breakable things, but he could also reach for the stars.

Spots still available for summer day camp

Spots still available for summer day camp

It’s summertime, and for camp counselors in Garden City, the living’s busy.

The city’s day camp has entertained an average of nearly 70 youngsters per week throughout this summer, the largest draw in recent years, at the Garden City Recreation Center near Groves High.

There, the campers swarm around a gymnasium during dodgeball and soccer matches, or bob and splash in a nearby pool.

Arts and crafts, field trips and archery sessions also keep the kids — and 12 counselors — occupied.

West Broad Y's refurbished swimming pool off and kicking

Those passing by the West Broad Street YMCA recently might have
heard a sound not emanated from the facility for years - splashing.

After a massive cleanup and renovation effort, the facility's rundown swimming pool reopened June 14.

With
temperatures in the upper 80s last week, 7-year-old T.J. Charles
couldn't have been happier than to be playing in the water beneath
clear skies.

"It's good, because when it's a beautiful day, it looks entirely blue," T.J. said, grinning and pointing toward the water.
