The mysterious entertainment value of an ottoman
Today I thought I would rearrange some furniture in my house. Nothing major – just a couple of ottomans. So I moved one ottoman in front of the sofa in the living room as a kind of casual take on a coffee table that doubles as extra seating. I wasn't entirely sold on the idea, but thought it would be good to give it a test run.
As I stepped back to see how it looked, my three children instantly appeared like a swarm, taking turns throwing themselves upon the ottoman. They were giggling and having great fun, and I just stared for a minute, trying to make sense of the situation.
This was the very same ottoman that had previously sat, mostly undisturbed, just on the other side of the very same room. And now, in a new location, it was a wonderful attraction and source of fun for my kids.
Then I had my revelation. Rather than giving my children gifts of new toys for Christmas, I can simply rearrange their existing toys to pump up the excitement level. Imagine my kids' joy as they awake on Christmas morning to find all their toys shuffled around in new and exciting ways! They'll be amused for hours! Hey, we can even forget about a trip to Sea World or Disney for sure... I'll just rearrange more furniture. Yeah... that should work.
