Cultivating a Lighter, Healthier You

Dear Lovely Mommie,

As with many avenues in life there is a supportive environment that awaits your need and is ready to fulfill your wishes and all it usually takes is stepping off your typical path and utilizing some new tactics that promote success.

When we talk about a supportive environment in regard to food let’s take a look at habits you can be forming and decisions you can make that enhance your chances of turning over a new leaf and including foods in your day that are encouraging weight loss, enhancing your energy level and when all is said and done and the dishes are done for the day you feel good about the choices that you made.  Why not take a peek at the following suggestions that are geared toward healthy, positive choices and promote your stability and encourage weight loss?

~Fresh vegetables and fruits are an imperative item in your daily food array.  Choosing fruits and veggies that are in season keeps the cost down.  Fresh is best, but if this is not possible, canned or frozen are better than none at all.  Aim for 2-4 servings of fruit/day and mix up your selections and color choices.  One medium fruit is about the size of a baseball.

~Dairy is a terrific addition to any woman’s daily food menu.  Be sure to choose low-fat options when selecting milk, yogurt and cheeses.  Beware of fat-free dairy options because they tend to be somewhat tasteless when eaten alone.  Dairy products build strong bones, ward off osteoporosis in women and are extremely beneficial for an aging body.  2-3 servings/day.  A serving of cheese equates into the size of three stacked dice.

~Meats and beans keep your tummy feeling fuller and have a tendency to halt the munching machine later down the line.  Meat choices should be lean and skin-free; stay away from the dark meat and aim for 2-3 servings/day.  Visualize your 3 oz. portion size as a deck of cards.

~Whole wheat products should be your ultimate goal: whole wheat breads, pastas, rice, cereals and crackers are all potential options.   Be sure to check the ingredients when purchasing these items, the first or second ingredient should state 100% whole wheat.  One cup of cereal resembles the size of a baseball.

You can make a difference in your life and make the choices that support your goals.  The next time you go grocery shopping think about what you put into your cart and make healthy choices.
